Martin Babler
VP of Immunology Sales and Marketing, Genentech

Martin Babler is VP of Immunology Sales and Marketing at Genentech with responsibility for Xolair, Rituxan Immunology and the late stage Immunology pipeline.
Prior to his current role Martin was Senior Director and head of Commercial Development in charge of marketing and strategic input for all products in Genentech's pipeline across the different therapeutic areas. His team was focused on creating high value assets in close collaboration with Research and

Development and introduced several new tools and systems to the organization that help optimize product launches.

Martin joined Genentech several years ago as Director of Marketing in the Cardiovascular Franchise. Prior to joining Genentech, Martin held various roles of increasing responsibility in sales, sales management, marketing and business development on a global as well as affiliate level with Eli Lilly and Company. Martin Babler holds a degree in Pharmacy/Pharmacology from the ETH in Zurich, Switzerland and has attended the Executive Development Program at Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Joseph A. Carlino, Ph.D.
Principal, Carlino Consulting

Joe Carlino is a drug development consultant with over 25 years experience in the Life Sciences and Biopharmaceutical Industry. His 17 years in Project and Program Management within the biotechnology industry have included a broad range of clinical indications, therapeutic modalities, and corporate alliances. His hands-on development experience has been built upon a strong scientific foundation in biologics, small molecules, monoclonal antibodies, and traditional pharmaceuticals. Joe’s scientific and development expertise is leveraged by his clear and effective communication skills when working with corporate stakeholders from the bench-top to the boardroom, and with community and academic leaders.

Prior to his work with biotechnology clients in the SF Bay Area as Principal of Carlino Consulting, Joe was at Chiron Corporation for 9 years, most recently as Senior Director and Project Leader, Development Management, within the BioPharmaceuticals Business Unit. He led and managed pre-clinical, clinical, and commercial projects, primarily those being co-developed with corporate partners. Prior to Chiron, Joe managed and directed projects at Collagen Corporation and its spin-off, Celtrix Pharmaceuticals, for 9 years. His early scientific work includes post-doctoral research at Cetus Corporation, and characterization of malignancy-associated glucocorticoid receptors at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Joe received his Ph.D. in Pathobiology/Immunology from Columbia University.

His experience in Development Management has included indications such as psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, macular degeneration, mucositis, wound repair, transplant rejection, infectious disease, and various solid and hematologic oncology indications. Joe’s drug development presentations have included topics such as the challenges of partnered projects; the effective use of budgets and financial information by project teams; defining the value of enterprise project management systems; explicit definition of accountability and authority to efficiently execute drug development plans; and, defining stage-gates and the decision-making authority within corporations to efficiently progress through them. Joe holds six patents, has numerous scientific publications, is an active member of the Drug Information Association (DIA), is an Advisory Board member to the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development, and contributes to the management of PMPharma, a project management professional association in the San Francisco Bay Area.


Brad Dawson
Director, Life Sciences Consulting practice, Conformia Software, Inc.

Brad Dawson is a Director in the Life Sciences consulting practice of Conformia Software, Inc. Mr. Dawson is a seasoned strategy and operations consultant with nine years world-class management consulting experience leading complex pharmaceutical strategy, business process, and supply chain improvement initiatives. He is highly experienced at solving complex business operational challenges through rigorous analytical and quantitative analysis and business process redesign. Specialized in supply chain strategy and design, Mr. Dawson has lead numerous global supply chain optimization and redesign projects for many leading pharmaceutical companies.

Prior to joining Conformia Software, Brad spent eight years with the Life Science consulting practices of Deloitte Consulting and Ernst & Young where he developed deep pharmaceutical strategy and operational expertise. Mr. Dawson has managed many large scale business process improvement and growth strategy engagements which have significantly reduced costs, improved operation efficiencies, and positioned the client with a competitive edge in the marketplace.

A graduate of UCLA, Mr. Dawson holds BS in Psychobiology and Biostatistics.


Michael Eckstut
Vice President of Business Operations - Life Sciences,
Conformia Software Inc.

Michael Eckstut is the Vice President of Business Operations - Life Sciences for Conformia Software Inc. Michael is an experienced senior business professional with a broad range of business and operational experience in large, small and early stage companies in the life science and chemical industries as an executive, investor, advisor and board member. Mr. Eckstut has extensive experience building practice areas and consulting to major pharmaceutical and life sciences companies: - At A.T. Kearney, he was Vice President and head of the chemicals and pharmaceuticals practice with total staff of over 40 professionals working worldwide. He led numerous engagements in the pharmaceuticals and medical device industries in supply chain /e-commerce linkages, strategic sourcing, and other major business process re-engineering efforts as well as implementation of major ERP systems. Mr. Eckstut also led strategy and organization development assignments to extend product patent life, “re-purpose” products and increase R&D portfolio value. - At Booz Allen & Hamilton, he was Vice President and head of the chemicals and pharmaceuticals practices and served as a member of the Booz Allen board of directors from 1991-1993 and head of the New York Office in 1989-1990. Mr. Eckstut led the development of initial business strategies for early stage biotechnology firms in the early 1990's, two of which have grown to be leaders in their field, and aided in licensing strategy development to build out therapeutic area strategies. Mr. Eckstut also has extensive experience marketing, selling and delivering enterprise software for the Life Sciences industry: - At Model N, he was Vice President, Vertical markets and developed the health care and life sciences market approach, identified target customers and selling strategy, built the tangible value proposition (significant sales improvement benefits identified through a facilitated opportunity assessment) and built a cross-functional pre-sales team to deliver the strategy for the company's pricing and revenue management applications. - At Velosel he was Senior Vice President, Strategic Alliances and Services for this applications company focusing on supplier enablement and content management and led the closing of the initial Beta customer and first commercial customer. He was COO of its predecessor company (MartQuest) responsible for all sales, marketing, professional services and business development. - At Chem Connect, he served as Senior Vice President, Business Development, for the pioneer online chemicals and plastics marketplace and exchange. Mr. Eckstut is also active at various levels in the life science industry at large: - As co-Chair of the Health Care and Life Sciences Committee of the Keiretsu Forum, an early-stage investment community of accredited private equity investors, venture capitalists and corporate/institutional investors with multiple locations in the US - As a member of the Board of Advisors of several early stage companies in health care services, biotechnology and R&D Lead Development. - As advisor and coach to the Spingboard Silicon Valley 2004 participants. He holds a BS and MS cum laude in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MBA (as a Baker Scholar) from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.


Douglas I. Kalish
Educator, Consultant

Douglas I. Kalish, Ph.D. is an educator, consultant and serial entrepreneur who has founded or been an early executive in three companies. With a deep technology background and over 30 years of management experience, Doug provides strategic business and product advice to the information technology and biotechnology industries, with an emphasis on collaboration, and knowledge and content management.

As a Lecturer, Doug taught 'The Business of Biotechnology' at the UC-Berkeley Haas Business School and created a three-part online course entitled 'Fundamentals of Drug Discovery' for the Stanford Center for Professional Development. From 1998 to 2001, he served as the Vice President and Chief Knowledge Officer at Scient. Prior to joining Scient, Doug was a Managing Partner of the Price Waterhouse Technology Centre.
Doug holds an AB in Neurobiology from Michigan and PhD in Biology from Harvard University
